This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
Guidelines: There is a risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids in non-health care workplaces where there are sharp objects such as needles, broken glass and/or other sharp objects capable of penetrating the skin.
a) Wear nitrile gloves while disposing of sharp objects that are contaminated with bodily fluids.
b) Use tongs, tweezers or hand clamps to pick up and dispose of sharp objects.
c) If there is a risk of splashing, wear protective eyewear.
d) Dispose of sharp objects point first in approved bio hazardous sharps containers.
e) Wash your hands before and after disposing contaminated sharps.
f) All disposal containers should be stored in such a way as to prevent access by unauthorized persons.
g) Disposal of bio-hazard sharps containers must be completed as per territorial regulations.
h) If your skin is punctured by a sharp, let it bleed, flush the contacted area with water, followed by reporting the incident to your supervisor and the work unit first aid attendant.
