This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
a) All operators shall complete a Canada Safety Council approved industrial snowmobile and/or ATV operator safety course
b) Thoroughly train with and understand the vehicle operator’s manual prior to use.
c) When the vehicle has a winch, familiarize yourself with the methods to use this equipment safely.
d) Operate the vehicle in a manner suitable for the terrain and weather conditions.
e) Ensure equipment has been recently/seasonally serviced and suitably equipped - check fluid levels, tire/track condition and that all protective devices are in place and working properly.
f) Plan enough fuel to travel to and from destination, as well as a reserve amount for unexpected requirements.
g) Wear appropriate PPE and clothing to match elements as per your departments OH&S policy, while operating ATVs and snow machines.
h) Carry survival items appropriate to season and conditions.
i) Secure cargo items properly in the safest manner.
j) Secure parking brake while stopped for a period of time.
k) While negotiating terrain, ensure that the operators weight is shifted uphill at all times.
l) Maneuver ATVs and snow machines on and off transport vehicles in a slow, deliberate and controlled manner.
m) Always secure loading ramps to transport vehicles for loading and unloading
n) When crossing a road, bring vehicle to a stop at the shoulder, look both ways and ride in a controlled manner across it.
a) Do not operate an ATV or snow machine while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
b) Do not overload the vehicle.
c) Do not drive ATV or snow machine on paved or public roads, as these vehicles are not designed for on-road use.
d) Do not perform stunts on ATVs or snow machines.
