Purpose:

This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.

This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.

DO:

  • Refer to the vessel’s owner manual and/or the appropriate regulatory body to ensure that your vessel has the required safety equipment.
  • File a float plan and leave a copy with your supervisor and/or the workplace emergency contact
  • Obtain your Pleasure Craft Operators course through Transportation Canada
  • Familiarize yourself with the Small Vessel Regulations and the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide
  • Wear all required PPE when working on board boats, canoes or rafts
  • Keep designated safety items assigned in one kit for specified boat
  • Check the weather forecast prior to starting your trip
  • Ensure that all required safety equipment for the size of your boat is on board
  • Check all fluid levels and battery charge at the start of each day
  • Verify that the drain plug is in prior to starting or launching the boat
  • Consider having a secondary drain plug, in case the other one goes missing or is damaged
  • Use waterproof containers for all critical safety/survival equipment
  • Check all running lights (if required for the size of your boat) prior to starting your trip
  • Test all communication devices prior to departure

DO NOT:

  • Do not proceed with water activities should a small craft advisory be in effect
  • Do not overload your vessel
  • Do not mix safety equipment where possible
  • Do not use safety flares or other signaling devices inappropriately
