This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
a) Ensure that your workplace is ergonomically designed to suit you.
b) The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has ergonomic resources located at http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/ergonomics/office/
c) Organize your work area so that frequently used items are close to you.
d) Avoid over-reaching and twisting
e) Have a chair that fits and is adjusted to you.
f) Use a foot rest when necessary.
g) Maintain good posture while working at your desk or computer.
h) Take frequent breaks to stretch and move around.
i) Ensure your work area is tidy and clean; refer to the Office Hygiene SWP.
a) Ensure monitor placement is appropriate for you.
b) Position mouse and keyboard as appropriate for you.
c) Use document holders when appropriate.
d) Do not place computers or other equipment too close to the edge of the desk or other surfaces.
e) Get up consistently during the day to take a break and stretch.
a) Do not use furniture, tools or other equipment for anything other than its intended purpose (i.e., do not use a box for a chair).
b) Read the operating manual or otherwise become familiar with the hazards and safe use of workstation equipment.
c) Maintain office furniture and tools as damaged equipment may cause injury.
