This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
a) Fire alarm should be inspected on a monthly basis and records maintained. Any and all repairs to be completed immediately.
b) Every employee is responsible to know emergency exits, muster locations and also where alarm pull stations are location. If you are trained in the use of fire extinguishers, they may be used as a means to get out of the building.
c) Store flammables in properly labelled containers in designated areas. Keep flammables away from smoking, welding, burning or other sources of heat.
d) Smoke in approved smoking areas only.
e) Discard butts in approved containers, never in wastebaskets or trash cans
f) Keep combustible material well away from heaters, and other potential sources of ignition
g) Consider installing non-flammable pads beneath stoves, heaters or other equipment, where there could be a chance that the floor might catch fire.
h) Employees are to be trained in the proper use of Fire Extinguishers. Records must be maintained with the supervisor of the work unit.
i) Health and Safety Representative from each work area will be designated to inspect the Fire Extinguishers once a month. Records must be maintained and any extinguisher that requires to be replaced or refilling must be completed immediately.
j) Fire extinguishers must be inspected annually by certified provider and records maintained by them.
k) Every five years maintenance and testing of portable extinguishers shall be hydrostatically test carbon dioxide and water type extinguishers.
Points of access to and egress from all work areas, work stations, storage areas, shut of switches, control panels and any emergency supplies or equipment shall be unrestricted and unimpeded at all times.
