This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
Guidelines: There is a risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids in non-health care workplaces when needles are found in public areas such as parking lots.
a) In Whitehorse - Call Blood Ties at 633-2437 Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
b) In Whitehorse - Call Outreach Van at 334-1647 Monday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
c) Outside of Whitehorse contact RCMP or Community Health Centre for advice
d) Place something by the sharps to inform others of the hazard
e) Inform co-workers of the hazard
f) Complete an incident report
g) Refer to needle safety link below for additional information
a) Do not use your hands to pick up needles.
