This Safe Work Practice (SWP) will provide YG employees with a set of guidelines or “Do’s and Don’ts” that have been developed to mitigate hazards associated with this work task, as identified through your workplace hazard identification process. All YG employees performing this work task are required to be trained, knowledgeable and competent.
a) Visually inspect power tools prior to use – looking for damaged parts, loose fittings or frayed electrical cords
b) Ensure power tools used are CSA or UL approved and plugs are three prongs grounded or double insulated.
c) Use tools only in the manner in which they are designed
d) Read and follow manufacturer’s instructions prior to using
e) Do not remove safety guards from tools or subject tool beyond its obvious capacity
f) Use only proper size bits, blades, disks or other attachments for the task at hand
g) Remember to let the tool do the work; if you have to force the power tool reconsider another tool or approach
h) When changing out parts, always disconnect tool from power source
i) Do not carry, hoist or unplug the power tool by its cord
j) Ensure proper personal protective equipment is worn when working with power tools (i.e, eye protection and/or face shields) to protect against flying particles
k) When working with power tools, avoid wearing any loose clothing, articles and if required secure long hair to avoid getting caught
l) Ensure adequate lighting present in area where working with power tools
